Lija’s iconic Belvedere tower, built in 1857, has been handed overto the local council to be used forcultural purposes.
The council is renting the tower in Transfiguration Avenue at a nominal annual fee of €250 to bring Lija residents closer to their village’s history.
The tower was once in the centre of extensive gardens, but road works and other developments left it isolated.
In the past year, the Land Department devolved 24 sites, double the number of the previous year, to local councils, sport organisations and NGOs.
