The Malta FA will be meeting Premier League clubs to discuss possible changes to the 2014-15 championship.

Bjorn Vassallo, the MFA CEO, told reporters yesterday that they are considering a new module to the league in a bid to improve the level of competition.

“The Premier League will be high on our agenda this term,” Vassallo said at the Conference Hall in Ta’ Qali.

“We will be holding meetings with representatives from all 12 Premier League clubs during which we shall study a number of changes that, if approved, will come into effect as from the 2014-15 season.

“We feel that after almost 12 years we should start looking at different options.”

Changes to the Premier League were first introduced in 2000/01 with participating teams first facing each other over two rounds. Teams are then split into the Cham-pionship and Relegation pools and overall tallies halved.

The layout was never really popular with stadium-goers but the format was retained mainly due to the clubs’ failure to come up with a new format that enjoyed the backing of all parties involved.

The 2013-14 Premier League gets under way on August 17 and wraps up in April as the MFA will host the 2014 UEFA U-17 finals between May 9 and 21.

This season, there will be no matches on Friday evenings and instead four fixtures will be pencilled in for Saturdays and two on Sundays... or vice-versa.

“After looking at the 2012-13 statistics we realised that Premier League matches on Fridays were becoming less popular, with attendances falling short of expectations,” Vassallo said.

“Besides, clubs also complained that matches on weekdays were causing a few extra problems to the players and officials, so we came to the decision to hold all our top-flight matches on Saturdays and Sundays.

“Top matches will not be played simultaneously though.”

Meanwhile, the MFA are cur-rently undergoing works to improve facilities at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

A new artificial turf pitch is being installed and renovation works are also being carried out in the stands and dressing rooms.

The project at the Ħamrun ground should be ready by the end of August.

The Hibs Stadium is also being refurbished. There will be new dressing rooms and a project to increase capacity. The stadium in Corradino will host its first matches of the season in November.

The season officially gets under way with the BOV Super Cup, contested by champions Birkirkara and FA Trophy holders Hibs, at the National Stadium on August 7.
