Restoration works at the Wignacourt Tower in St Paul’s Bay, which is soon to celebrate its 405th anniversary, are underway.

The external walls of the tower are being restored with the support of the European Regional Development Fund. The works are part of a Malta Tourism Authority project in collaboration with heritage NGO.

Wignacourt Tower, the earliest coastal watch tower still standing in Malta, was built by Grand Master Wignacourt in 1610.

In devotion to Malta’s patron saint, its foundation stone was laid on February 10 of the same year.

DLĦ’s warden for the tower Stanley Farrugia Randon said: “This expensive and extensive conservation work is just an example of the continued effort necessary to save our built heritage for posterity. We could not allow DLĦ’s 50th anniversary to go by without giving this magnificent tower a proper facelift and are grateful to the MTA for its collaboration.”
