I agree with Alfred Palma (The Sunday Times, November 27) that recently we are massacring various Maltese words and simultaneously ridiculing English ones by giving them a phonetic interpretation.
I have already expressed my views on other occasions regarding the Deċiżjonijiet taken by the Kunsill Nazzjonali ta’ l-Ilsien Malti in 2008. Some decisions were in the right direction but others were not.
I have insisted (and still do) that words such as skond and skont, risq and riżq should have been left untouched.
This also holds good for words like Amen which has been regarded for ages as an international word like ‘stop’.
One final point. When we are all aware that some TV presenters are eliminating Maltese words still in use and introducing others like nibbejkjaw (naħmu, to bake), niħħendiljaw (nikkontrollaw, to handle), nipplejtjaw (inpoġġu fil-platt, to plate) and lots of others, why does the Kunsill Nazzjonali ta’ l-Ilsien Malti remain silent?
I also agree with Mr Palma that the way we are handling certain Maltese and English words shows a lack of respect for both languages.
