A 25-year-old man who overdosed on heroin the same day he was released from prison has been placed on probation for three years after being found guilty of simple possession and breaching a probation order.

When Roderick Montesin, from Siġġiewi, was let out of jail on November 15, 2011, he bought a sachet of heroin for €10 in Ħamrun. He then went home where he took the drugs.

His sister later found him in the bedroom unconscious, purple and unable to breathe properly.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras noted in the judgment that the probation officers reported Mr Montesin had since managed to keep away from drugs.

He was being tested once a week and has been clean since September 2012.
