Lino Vella writes:

Malta’s tennis and golfing communities have lost one of their great veterans in Margaret Kirk, who passed away last Monday at the age of 87. Born in New Zealand, she settled in Malta in 1970 and won many a tennis title throughout the years. Besides excelling in singles, she partnered Michael Scerri in mixed doubles and Yvonne Cuschieri in women’s doubles to add several trophies to her impressive tally. In the early 1990s she switched to golf and played for 25 years, also partnering Mrs Cuschieri.

She was known as a feisty player on the court but was unflappable in the chair, having served as a Wimbledon umpire. Margaret was married to Michael Kirk and they had two children, Jeremy and Jane. She married John MacDermott in 1989.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at the church of Divine Mercy in Naxxar at 10am.
