Amy Micallef’s gold medal in the girls’ 100m breaststroke event at the FISEC Games on Saturday also meant a national record for the budding swimmer, the ASA said in a statement yesterday.

Micallef clocked 1:14.55 for the two-lap race at the National Pool to go beyond the previous best mark for the distance, which also belonged to her and stood at 1:15.67.

The gold medal was not the only one for Micallef in the Games as last week she was twice runner-up when swimming the 50m and 200m breaststroke races.

The ASA said Francesca Falzon Young established two new best times in the national Age Group C in the 50m and 100m freestyle, clocking 27.76 and 1:00.82 respectively.

Falzon Young’s time of 32.72 in the 50m backstroke was also the best so far in her age bracket category.

It was also confirmed that Michael Stafrace had broken the Age Group D record in the 200m breaststroke event on his way to winning a silver medal on Saturday. His time was 2:31.35.
