Day One of competition from the 2015 FISEC Games yielded some satisfying results for hosts Malta but also a couple of upsets as most of the visiting 800 athletes currently here for the young students’ multi-sport festival got engaged in one of the six sport on the programme.

Football matches are being played at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali and Malta is being represented by two boys’ teams – A and B.

Malta B started on the right footing after beating Malta A 4-3 in an early-morning kick-off.

Malta A, however, made up for the upset after beating The Netherlands 2-1 later in the afternoon but Malta B went down 3-0 to Brazil.

Futsal is also in this year’s calendar and competition is held at De La Salle College, Cottonera.

The local five-a-side team went down to France 8-5 with Brazil sealing the opener when beating Portugal 5-4 in another qualifying match.

The Maltese basketball teams, boys and girls, were also in action at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion.

The girls’ team beat Spain 38-28 in a round-robin tournament match. The other sides in competition hail from France, Flanders and Brazil.

The boys’ basketball team will have to lift their game in their next outings to keep in contention after losing against Austria 47-31, yesterday.

In the girls’ volleyball tournament, at Cottonera Sports Complex, Malta went down fighting 2-1 to Spain B (16-25, 26-24, 15-11). Their next fixture is against France.

The 67th edition of the FISEC Games continue today. Most of the tournaments will be decided on the final day of competition – next Tuesday.
