Artistic interpretations of multi-ethnic, cultural and religious stories have led to the creation of Stejjer Imfewħa, a multidisciplinary exhibition currently showing at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa.
This exhibition marks the closing of a nine-month cycle of guided workshops during which participants from different backgrounds and ethnicities had the opportunity to share personal anecdotes about their contact with spices, herbs and flowers.
It, in fact, showcases the work of a number of artists whose work is inspired by these stories and is curated by Sabrina Calleja Jackson.
The works presented vary from botanical drawings in ink by Charles Bennett and Simone Cutajar, interactive audio pieces by Amy Borg, an installation piece by Sarah Mamo and Glen Calleja and solar prints by Kasia Zmokla.
The artworks invite the visitors to lean in and listen closely, smell the flowers and herbs, and to look closely at the texts presented on the installation.
The exhibition also includes research and a series of illustrations by Guido Lanfranco taken from the museum’s collection.
Stejjer Imfewħa is an Integra Foundation project, funded by the Creative Communities Fund (Arts Council Malta) and Friends of the Earth Malta.
Stejjer Imfewħa is a follow-up to the project Ħwawar u Fjuri, initially launched in 2014 and which over the past two years has continued developing.
To capture and present the narratives shared through this edition of intercultural dialogues, Stejjer Imfewħa has included a much greater artistic element.
• The exhibition runs at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa until June 26.
