The idea to subsidise the installation of photovoltaic panels on private roofs was a great one and a step forward for our islands in trying to get rid of its dependence on oil, which, as everybody knows, is at present the most expensive way to generate electricity.

However, unfortunately for me – and I know that like me there are many others – I cannot install them on my roof. Both my neighbours have demolished their terraced houses and instead built flats on four storeys. Consequently, my roof is in the shade most of the time.

My questions to the powers that be are: Why am I being discriminated against just because my roof is shaded? Am I not paying my taxes like those that installed their PVs on their roof?

Why are they being granted €3,000 as well as a rate of 25c per unit but I get nothing even though I would like to invest in PVs?” My solution is: Instead of the government handing over all the area of its roofs to a private company, it should first investigate how many there are like me who have a shaded roof or who live in a flat and cannot install PVs but are willing to invest in them. Then what area remains may be given over or rented to the private sector.
