One of the most thrilling matches so far from the MCA Summer League was played on Saturday as Marsa took on Overseas.

Overseas looked heading for an upset when managing a modest 124 runs but staged a remarkable comeback only to fall just short of edging their opponents in the end.

Overseas had two players on loan for this match and both left their mark at the crease.

Andy Naudi made an im-pressive 42 as Dave Borg scored four fours and a six in his 31 runs.

Mike Caruana was 19 not out from 16 balls, John Bolland added ten and David MacDonald, playing in his first league game, chipped in with eight.

For Marsa, Simon Lavender and Sarfraz Ali took two wickets each.

All seemed lost for Overseas when by the 10th over, Marsa had already amassed 80 runs with a brilliant batting display from Lavender, in particular. He scored 41 runs.

Ronnie Sacco made 28 from 22 balls but then a change in bowling from both ends yielded seven wickets, MacDonald and Caruana both taking three each and there was also a run out.

With all these wickets falling and the overs ticking, Marsa still only needed six runs to win.

Facing the first ball was Daniel Galea. His only task was to get off strike and let the experienced Mark G. Sacco (12 runs) take over.

Sacco did not get a run in the next ball but managed two each in the following two before hitting the winning point off the penultimate ball.

Marsa earned eight points for their win and Overseas’ bold effort only got them one point in the end.

Next Saturday, Marsa take on POP Mellieħa and Overseas play Melita Betfair.
