What comes across in the report on the consultant appointments’ controversy (August 15), and particularly the submissions from Godfrey LaFerla (surgical department chairman) and from Thomas Fenech (ophthalmic department head), is a Public Service Commission (PSC) which appears reluctant, or incapable, of facing up to its responsibilities in this situation, i.e., making sure that the best qualified people, and particularly those bringing work experience from overseas centres of medical excellence, be appointed to Maltese public service consultant posts for the benefit of our citizens.
Could it be that the PSC is well past its sell-by date or that the people running it are not of the right calibre?
