Transfer activity in the mid-season window is often likened to panic buying.

This season, teams in the bottom half of the Premier League standings were heavily involved in the January window as they looked to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.

Newcastle United signed six players while bottom club Queens Park Rangers broke their transfer record twice to snap up French striker Loic Remy from Marseille (eight million pounds) and former Blackburn Rovers centre-back Christopher Samba from Anzhi Makhachkala (£12.5 million).

Other clubs in the Premier League stayed away from big-money signings in the winter transfer market, also with an eye on UEFA’s Financial Fair play rules which come into effect in season 2014-15.
