A three-year EU-funded project that aims to improve the accessibility to Malta and Sicily and overcome current bottlenecks between the two islands was recently launched in Vittoria, Sicily. University of Malta’s Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development and Transport Malta are the local partners in the Streets project.
The Sicilian partners are the Dipartimento Regionale delle infrastrutture, della mobilità e dei trasporti in Sicily, Collegio Universitario ARCES, Vittoria local council and Catania Port Authority.
The University institute is responsible to analyse the territory and traffic flows in and out of the ports of Catania and Malta; to propose a draft joint strategy to determine current transport problems; to identify the various means of transport between Sicily and Malta; to analyse passenger and goods flows between Malta and Sicily; and to propose an integrated and sustainable transport solution.
All the project partners were represented at the project launch conference that took place recently in Vittoria, Sicily. The University Institute was represented by Maria Attard, Luana Chetcuti Zammit, Nicolette Formosa, Deborah Mifsud and Boglarka Toth. During the conference Dr Attard presented the work being carried out to develop a digital map of the transport network and the survey results gathered so far on the flow of passengers by air to and from Catania and Trapani.
