Following the closing date for applications by clubs to participate in the 2013 winter and summer competitions on January 4, the ASA has confirmed that there will be ten teams playing in this year’s competitions, sponsored by Bank of Valletta.
Seven of these will take part in the Winter League which will be played between March 2 and May 5, while the summer championships are scheduled to start on June 7 and end on August 31, with the knock-outs for both divisions to be played between June 30 and August 24.
Since the number of teams applying for each division in the summer league falls within the stipulated limit, all applications have been accepted.
This means that the Premier and First Division, consisting of five teams each, will be contested over three rounds, a total of 30 matches in each division, before the champion teams are determined. It is to be noted that the play-offs, which have featured in the past two seasons, are being scrapped.
Meanwhile, a provisional calendar, based on the decisions taken at the beginning of last month, will be confirmed during an-other meeting of club presidents shortly.
The 12-week summer calendar has been devised over 15 playing days so that there will be six sets of midweek fixtures (two Premier and two First Division), whereas the nine sets of weekend matches will comprise two Premier, two First Division and one junior league match. These will be played at the National Pool.
The teams participating in the Premier Division are Exiles, Neptunes, San Ġiljan, Sirens and Sliema, while those in the First Division are Marsascala, Marsaxlokk (re-included after being absent last year), Otters, Ta’ Xbiex and Valletta.
The Winter League will consist of seven teams plus the U-17 team, probably taking part out of competition as preparation for the Euro Junior Championship.
The teams are Exiles, Marsaxlokk, Neptunes, San Ġiljan, Sirens, Sliema and Valletta.
The season’s calendar also includes the Euro Junior Championship to be held in Malta between September 7 and 15.
