Gżira United registered their second win of the season when they beat rivals Msida 2-0, with both goals being scored in the first 35 minutes.
It was a deserved win for the Maroons, whose dominance over the opponents was evident throughout the entire match.
They are now top of the stan-dings with maximum points from two matches and also boast the highest number of goals scored in the division – seven – along with joint leaders Mellieha.
For Msida, this was the second consecutive loss and now they find themselves at the bottom of the grid with no points.
Truth be told, when one considers the number of saves effected by the Msida goalkeeper, the goal-tally should have been much higher for the Maroons who put up an impressive perfomance, greatly encouraged by their numerous supporters present.
Gżira were the only team on the attack as they dictated play throughout the match. They almost took the lead on eight minutes when striker Anthony Ewurum rounded goalkeeper John Agius but shot just wide in front of a gaping goal.
The Maroons eventually took the lead on the half hour, when Simon Shead’s shot was partially blocked by Agius and from the rebound, captain Matthew Cocks blasted the ball home.
Barely five minutes later, Gżira doubled their lead when Shead’s powerful drive from outside the area completely surprised the Msida custodian.
Despite holding a comman-ding two-goal lead, Gżira continued to press forward after the interval.
But, their best chance only came on 80 minutes when the impressive Ewurum broke free on the left before firing a fierce drive which came off the post.
Msida’s response failed to arrive as they looked short of ideas up front with Gżira goal-keeper Simon Agius rarely called into action.
