Malta’s specially designed bird park in Salina was yesterday inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi who described it as a “natural oasis”.
A private initiative, Birdpark Malta blends rural environment and education, as visitors can learn about the 200 species of birds and animals in the park. It has been the life-long passion of 43-year-old Kevin Mallia who put all his savings into the park. What had begun as a simple hobby as a child developed into a zealous adventure and long hours of work.
The park, which benefitted from EU funds, has been designed to provide a protected wetland habitat, providing an ideal resting, feeding and breeding site for migratory birds throughout the year.
Some of the bird species – ranging from flamingos to owls and cranes – are in well-kept cages and a large aviary, while others are free to fly in and out of a purpose-built lagoon, attracting other birds in the process.
Other animals on the park include meercats, kangaroos, antelopes and snakes.
The bird park project also complements other national projects in the area, which include the €7 million rehabilitation project of the salt pans, the building of the aquarium and the recently inaugurated water park. The park is open between Wednesday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
