Sannat Lions wrapped up a memorable season in style when they beat Nadur Youngsters 3-2 in the Richard Ellis Super Cup final last weekend.

The result was sweet revenge for the Lions who had lost to Youngsters in the GFA Cup final the week before.

The match turned out to be a tight affair with Nadur seeing more of the ball during the first half and Sannat coming more into the picture after the break.

The Youngsters took control of proceedings right from the outset but for all their possession they rarely threatened the Sannat goal.

After the break, Sannat stepped up a gear and almost scored with their first real attempt at goal but John Paul Grima did well to clear the ball off the line before Nwankwo could apply the killing touch.

However, Nwankwo was not to denied. On 52 minutes he fired a firm drive that flew into the back of the Nadur net.

A minute later, Sannat almost made it 2-0 but Chris Camilleri’s long-range shot hit the bar.

At the other end, Nadur were close to an equaliser on 56 minutes when an attempt by Anthony Portelli was cleared off the line by a Sannat defender.

Three minutes later, both sides were reduced to ten men as referee Anton Zammit dismissed Nadur’s Charles Hili and Andrew Debono, of Sannat, for retaliation.

The Lions were further hampered on 64 minutes when Peter Buttigieg was shown the red card after a second bookable offence.

Buoyed by their numerical advantage, Nadur pushed more men forward but it was Sannat who doubled the score on 74 minutes through a fine angled shot by Chris Camilleri.

The Youngsters refused to throw in the towel and two minutes later Anthony Portelli scored from a penalty to re-open the match.

But, Sannat re-established their two-goal lead on 90 minutes when in a swift break John Camilleri made it 3-1.

Deep into stoppage time Claudio Antunes bridged the gap for Nadur but it was too little too late as Sannat held on to their lead till the end.

After the match, GFA president Alvin Grech and Tonio Ellis, son of the late Richard Ellis, presented the trophy to Sannat captain Mark Muscat to the ecstatic cheers of his team-mates and club fans at the Gozo Stadium.
