Andre Schembri ended speculation regarding his future by signing for Greek side Panionios on a one-year contract, a JAD Media statement said yesterday.
Schembri’s career was put in turmoil last month when his former club Olympiakos Volos, who he joined in summer, were relegated to the Greek fourth division following their involve-ment in a match-fixing scandal.
That ruling by the country’s football authorities brought to an end Schembri’s short stint with Volos as he was freed from his contract and immediately started to look for a new club.
With his main goal being that to remain in the Greek Super League, Schembri trained with Panionios these last two weeks.
The Athens-based club seem to have been pleased with Schem-bri’s qualities and tabled a contract to the 25-year-old. His transfer was this week approved by the Greek FA and Schembri was presented to the media yesterday.
Panionios are currently second in the league with seven points from four matches, just two behind early pace-setters PAOK.
Tomorrow, they host AEK Athens.
After this match, Schembri is expected to travel to Malta to join the national squad ahead of the country’s remaining two Euro 2012 qualifiers – against Latvia (away) on October 7 and Israel (home) on October 11.
Schembri said that the past few weeks were very difficult for him.
“Now I’m relieved it’s over and to have succeeded in winning a contract with Panionios. I want to train hard and force my way into the team,” he said.
Schembri thanked Olympiakos Volos coach, Javi Garcia, his former team-mates and all Volos fans for their warmth during the past few months.
Panionios are Schembri’s fifth overseas club. His first stint abroad was with Germany’s Eintracht Braunschweig before joining Carl Zeiss Jena. He then moved to Austria to play for Austria Karnten.
Last season, he was on the books of Hungary’s Ferencvaros for whom he scored 16 goals.
