Veteran actress Mary Rose Bonello passed away yesterday, aged 80.

Lovingly known as Nanna because of her role in the TV series Simpatiċi, she will remain with audiences through the new season to be aired soon, according to the production company. She was present during the filming of the first episodes of the new season.

“Nanna will remain with us in the first few episodes. And we will make sure she remains alive through our series,” said Frida Cauchi, an actress who worked with her for about 15 years.

Breaking down in tears, she said Ms Bonello would be sorely missed.

“She was an exemplary person, with a big heart, who always showed respect to everyone. She taught us a great deal and always did it with a smile.

“Even when her husband passed away, she carried on with her role and did her best,” Ms Cauchi said.

Ms Bonello’s long career started in 1952 at the Empire Stadium in Gżira. Her first public appearance was followed by a string of stage and radio productions.

In 1960, she had to stop for 15 years to care for her family and returned with her first TV appearance in the Maltese classic Wenzu u Rożi in which she played the part of Rożi.

She also took part in several feature films shot in Malta, namely Clash of the Titans, Agora and Sinbad, in which she played the fortune teller.

Tributes and messages of condolence were widespread across the social media, where actors who worked with her expressed their sorrow at her loss.

“We have just received news that has caused more sorrow than we can express,” said veteran actor John Suda.

“Mary Rose Bonello, Nanna Katrin, has left us. We are glad she will meet the Lord.

“I am sure that St Anthony (who knows how many candles she lit in front of his statue), welcomed her with open arms.

“We will never forget you.”
