Speaker Michael Frendo told Parliament yesterday he had written to the Police Commissioner about reports of threats made to Nationalist MP Franco Debono and had asked the police to protect him.

Dr Debono raised the issue in last Wednesday’s sitting before Finance Minister Tonio Fenech started reading the Budget speech.

Dr Frendo was replying to Deputy Leader of the Opposition Anġlu Farrugia, who asked what action the Speaker had taken to ensure Dr Debono was protected. Dr Farrugia showed solidarity with Dr Debono and invited the Government side to do the same.

Justice Minister Chris Said appreciated the steps taken by the Speaker, adding that it was clear that the Government condemned any type of threat to MPs.
