Rugby Union: The British and Irish Lions passed the first genuine test of their Australia tour by grinding down a spirited Queensland Reds 22-12 in a rainy tour match yesterday. Scrumhalf Ben Youngs scored a first-half try and flyhalf Owen Farrell added 17 points in a perfect kicking night for the Lions, who had to weather a fierce second-half challenge in front of more than 50,000 fans at a heaving Lang Park. But the Lions held on to record their third win from three tour matches. They return to Lang Park to play the first of three test matches against the Wallabies on June 22.

Golf: Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia have been kept apart, for the first two rounds at least, in this week’s US Open at Merion. Woods will play alongside Rory McIlroy and Masters champion Adam Scott in a group containing the world’s top three. Garcia escaped punishment for what could be construed as a racist remark about Tiger Woods last month.

Cricket: West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin has been charged with a level two breach of the ICC code of conduct after allegedly claiming a dropped catch in Friday’s Champions Trophy match against Pakistan. During the Group B encounter at the Oval, which the West Indies won by two wickets, Ramdin ap-peared to claim a catch he had dropped off Pakistan captain Misbah ul-Haq when the batsman was on nought. The Trinidadian has subsequently been charged with breaching Article 2.2.11 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this week’s Wimbledon warm-up event at Halle in Germany, citing fatigue after a busy few weeks of tennis. “It is a pity and unfortunate Rafael cannot come,” said Halle tournament director Ralf Weber in a statement. “But I understand his decision... his health is the top priority.”
