A Spanish student got so drunk that he walked into an apartment block, made his way up to the roof and smashed the skylight with a pot, a court heard yesterday.

Jose Garcia Sorano, 22, entered the building in St Julian’s through the front door, which he found open on Tuesday morning.

He pleaded guilty to the charges, which included being so drunk he was unable to take care of himself.

The man, who is in Malta to learn English, used freshly withdrawn €50 notes to pay for the almost €2,000 in damage he had caused.

Prosecuting officer Trevor Micallef argued for a suspended jail term because the residents of Sliema, St Julian’s and Swieqi were suffering as a result of such unruly behaviour by foreigners.

Legal aid lawyer Anthony Cutajar said this would be excessive.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella conditionally discharged him for a year.
