What a pity the otherwise excellent article ‘Europe steps up its fight against superbugs’ (June 30) did not even mention one of the main reasons for superbugs developing their resistance to antibiotics.

One major reason why bugs become superbugs, by developing resistance, is that we often quickly feel we are cured and do not complete the course of antibiotics as prescribed. Not completing a course of antibiotics means an incomplete bug kill, which leads to those bugs that are still with us recovering from near death to emerge stronger and ever more resistant to our medicines.

We must learn to complete every course of antibiotics.
