A 24-year-old Somali man was given an 18-month-jail term suspended for three years after he admitted assaulting two police officers who intervened when they saw him hitting a telephone booth.

Ahmed Moogie Ahmed, who lives in Gżira, admitted before Magistrate Myriam Hayman attacking police constables Daniel Zammit and Joseph Camilleri on Monday at about 5.45am in St Julian’s.

He also admitted disobeying the officers, breaching the peace and being drunk in public.

The incident happened when the two officers spotted Mr Ahmed hitting the telephone booth and shouting in anger while drunk. When they intervened, Mr Ahmed grabbed PC Zammit by the neck and tried to bite PC Camilleri, sources said.

Police Inspector Elton Taliana prosecuted.
