In his Budget Speech for 2014, the Minister of Finance laudably promoted the proposed establishment of second and third tier pensions.

However, in the same speech, he then went on to perpetuate the perennial injustice being meted out to us service pensioners by offsetting part of our private pensions against our state pension.

How can he seriously encourage taxpayers to invest in second and third tier pension funds when the State has been plundering ours since 1979?

On March 21, the EU announced that it will be taking the Maltese Government to the European Court over this injustice. It is a pity that the opportunity to avoid this forthcoming court case has not been taken in these Budget proposals in order to eliminate this ongoing legalised theft of our investment towards a better pension in our old age.
