Yet another serious accident has occurred on Tower Road, Sliema and clearly something needs to be done. This road often grinds to a halt under rush hour traffic, yet, it is used as a rat run or race track at other times.

While not wishing to impede the flow of traffic – note that I use the term flow as opposed to speed – might it be an idea to turn the larger junctions, Sir Adrian Dingli, Stella Maris and College Street, into 5kmh paved, shared space areas? Much like the one next to Naxxar’s parish church?

This would allow traffic to flow through Tower Road and also provide an open space allowing pedestrians to cross, where they would have priority and where traffic would be calmed. It seems to work for Naxxar.

The added benefit would be the removal of the traffic lights. This would allow crossing on demand, but less dead time of traffic stopped at pedestrian crossings while nobody crosses.

There is nothing more frustrating than a red light at a vacant pedestrian crossing.

This would help traffic flow while discouraging the use of excessive speed.
