The Żebbuġ local council insists that more traffic lights should be installed along Mdina Road where two serious accidents took place over the past few days, mayor Alfred Grixti said.

A 34-year-old motorist was seriously injured yesterday when his car was involved in a collision with another vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old man, at about 10.45am in Mdina Road. This road cuts across Qormi, Żebbuġ and Rabat.

The accident happened just two days after an 83-year-old man died when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an electricity pole on the same road.

Investigators believe the man may have lost consciousness at the wheel.

A magisterial inquiry into both cases is being held.

Mr Grixti said that, being an arterial road, Mdina Road fell under the responsibility of Transport Malta.

In his opinion, the road was badly planned because there was an area where two lanes suddenly bottlenecked into one.

More traffic lights along the road should be installed to calm traffic down. The local council proposed three sets of lights: at the Siġġiewi roundabout, at the roundabout just outside Żebbuġ and at the one near St Dorothy’s School.

The council, he said, suggested having the lights working in unison but Transport Malta felt this would lead to congestion.

Mdina Road has been the site of several other accidents.

A quick internet search reveals one on August 1 last year when three people were injured in a collision between two cars.

In May that year, a 19-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was in crashed into a house along the road.
