Floriana is more than just the granaries or the main entrance to Valletta; so, to stress the point, the local council yesterday made the 15 gardens, historic buildings and railway tunnel accessibe to the public.
It all formed part of the third edition of Ġenna ta’ Ġonna... u ħafna aktar (A Paradise of Gardens… and much more).
The old railway remained one of the main attractions.
The tunnel, under St Philip Gardens, was first opened to the public two years ago.
It had been closed for commuters on March 31, 1931.
This Victorian railway station formed part of a 900-metre-long tunnel that ran from the Yellow Garage, beneath Valletta’s City Gate, to the Pinetum next to Portes des Bombes in Blata l-Bajda.
Today, there is only debris and the remnants of two luggage trolleys in the tunnel.
Instead of the train, cables run through the tunnel.
Throughout the day, people browsed through the locality’s gardens, museums, historical sites and buildings.
Among the attractions were original documents of the Knights, kept at the Capuchin Friars’ Library, and mummified friars in the same convent.
Visitors also had the opportunity to walk up to the Floriana parish church roof and belfry and enjoy its breathtaking view.
