The UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Libya, Abdel-Elah Mohamed Al Khatib, will tomorrow be the keynote speaker at the annual conference for Maltese ambassadors.

The theme chosen is Developments In The Southern Neighbourhood – The Way Forward. The conference starts today and is being held at the Le Meridien Hotel, St Julians.

Mr Al Khatib will be meeting Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg tomorrow morning, shortly before delivering his keynote address.

Ambassador Richard Cachia Caruana and Ambassador Saviour Borg will be addressing the conference on the developments in the southern neighbourhood from the EU and UN perspectives respectively.

There will also be a panel discussion on the subject with the participation of Malta’s ambassadors in Tunisia, Vickie Ann Cremona; Egypt, Giovanni Miceli; Libya, George Cassar; and John Inguanez from the ministry’s political directorate.

On Thursday, Malta Enterprise executive chairman Alan Camilleri will be talking about the strategy adopted to assist the business community during the current crisis, while Brigadier Martin Xuereb will delve into Malta’s role in extending humanitarian assistance to Libya.

The conference ends on Friday with an analysis of the developments in the North African region from the tourism perspective as well as the impact of the crisis on the national economy.
