This time around, Lawrence Gonzi is promising us that another Nationalist government will be honouring its past unfulfilled pledges such as the No. 1 Dock project, the Birżebbuġa waterpolo pitch, the Ta’ Qali Crafts Village, the Carnival Village, eliminating the never-ending lists of those waiting to undergo an operation, income tax cuts, a Budget surplus and SmartCity.

A major problem is thatmost of the above were tied to a time frame: the income tax cuts in the first year of the last legislature; turning the constant Budget deficit into a surplus by the year 2010 and creating 6,500 new jobs at SmartCity by 2012.

It’s about time that Gonzi stops trying to take us for a ride and acknowledges that these promises can no longer be honoured. Unless he can somehow revisit the past and then come back to the future, he simply cannot do these things now.
