Money raised from the sale of used, unwanted clothes, shoes, belts and handbags are financially supporting the rehabilitation and nurturing programme of Maltese hedgehogs being carried out by Nature Trust Malta.
The trust’s Wildlife Rescue Unit has saved over 120 hedgehogs so far this year, and most were rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitat.
The campaign is being run by Malta’s largest waste recovery scheme, Greenpak, in collaboration with the local councils of Santa Venera, San Ġwann, Mosta, Msida, Kirkop, Għaxaq, Żurrieq, Qrendi, Lija, Santa Luċija, Pembroke, Valletta, Naxxar, Qormi, Mqabba, Xagħra and Sannat. Residents in these localities have responded well to the campaign which has so far yielded over four tonnes of used textile material.
Greenpak Coop Society CEO Mario Schembri said tonnes of barely used clothes were being discarded every day and ending up in landfills. “Through this recycling campaign, Greenpak helps reduce waste and provides support to rehabilitate Malta’s wildlife.”
Nature Trust Malta executive president Vince Attard said: “The raw material, production and manufacturing of new clothes is a resource- and energy- intensive process. Every item of clothing saved represents a benefit for the planet. Greenpak’s collection and recycling campaign is a leading example of how giving clothes a second life not only reduces pressure on landfills, but also conserves resources.”
