A Labour government would give 16-year-olds the right to vote during local council elections, party leader Joseph Muscat said yesterday.
“Young people want less talk and more action,” he said during a meeting with members of the National Youth Council.
This statement was echoed by Alternattiva Demokratika who said voting age for all elections in Malta should go down to 16.
Granting 16-year-olds equal rights includes the right to vote in all elections in Malta and young voters deserved a say in local and national politics, Alternattiva Demokratika said.
Youth council president Matthew Vella welcomed Dr Muscat’s pledge to work on reducing the voting age from 18 to 16 – starting with local council elections.
During the meeting Dr Muscat and members of the council also spoke about the reforms that need to be put in place to ensure that the national broadcaster is more balanced.
They also touched upon the subjects of education, environmental sustainability and accessibility.
