Congratulations Malta on getting rid of the old yellow buses! And alongside that triumph, creating a modern network of routes zig-zagging the islands.

Bah humbug! to people who say that the pretty old yellow buses were not only charming and a tourist attraction, but with new engines (more government/EU money!) they could have been environmentally friendly too. No, they were old-fashioned in this modern age of fast Maltese car drivers.

At last, Maltese and tourists (rightly paying a 50 per cent premium – hang EU equality rules!) alike are encouraged, nay, forced, into their cars to get around the Maltese islands efficiently. Unlike with the old buses and routes when a car was unnecessary though always an option.

Now, buses are not a viable option so cars are essential – hurrah for Austin Gatt! His name will go down in history alongside his British counterpart of the 1960s Ernest Marples (and Dr Beeching).
