Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi visited Paris yesterday (pictured with President Francois Hollande) for the final leg of a European tour that has seen her hailed as a powerful symbol of peaceful defiance to dictatorship.

The Nobel Peace laureate was greeted by well-wishers from the local Myanmar community and human rights groups. as she arrived by train from Britain.

Rebels open fire, one killed

Malian rebels opened fire on protesters yesterday, shooting at least one dead, during a rally against the killing of a local official by the insurgents whose uprising has split the country in two.

Demonstrators in the northern town of Gao were protesting against the killing of Idrissa Oumarou, a local government official killed there on Monday.

Reporter deported

A correspondent for the international news wire Bloomberg was deported by Sudanese authorities yesterday, following her detention while trying to cover the country’s widening protest movement.

“They ordered me to leave,” a weeping Salma El Wardany said.
