The tiara Victoria Beckham wore for her wedding failed to sell at auction yesterday.

It was expected that the coronet-style headpiece would fetch between £18,000 and £25,000 at the Bonhams sale in central London. It failed to reach the undisclosed reserve price, however, with the highest bid for the lot being £14,000.

The singer and fashion designer – then Victoria Adams, also known as Posh Spice – commissioned Irish jewellery designer Slim Barrett to make the gold and diamond tiara for her 1999 wedding to footballer David Beckham.

The fairytale piece, which was exhibited by the Victoria and Albert Museum in its 100 Tiaras, Past And Present show, is made from 18-carat yellow gold, set with large brilliant-cut diamonds and suspended diamond drops. (PA)

Young girl’s ‘adorable gesture’

A five-year-old girl who wrote a letter of apology to department store John Lewis after she broke a bauble has been found following a social media campaign.

The girl, who signed her name as Faith, sent the letter after she accidentally broke the decoration while visiting a shop in Cambridge. She stuck two £1 coins to the note, which she posted to the “Christmas Department” of the store, the Daily Mail said.

Branch manager Dominic Joyce launched a bid to find the girl on Twitter using the tag #findfaith, saying he would like to thank her for the “adorable gesture”.

John Lewis confirmed that the girl’s parents had been in touch yesterday but had indicated that no further thanks was needed. (PA)

Man escapes as tree crushes car

A care worker on his rounds described how his car was crushed in a split second by a falling tree just moments after parking.

Muhammad Sial – a devout Muslim who prays everyday for his family and his elderly clients – said his prayers must have been answered following his near-miss in Birmingham, yesterday.

The 66-year-old said: “I didn’t hear a noise, I just got to the front door and turned to look back and the tree had smashed my car. The trunk of the tree was lying right across my car – it had happened just in an instant.”

Mr Sial, a care worker for seven years, described how just seconds before the tree fell he had pulled up to park in the quiet residential street, waving to a colleague, before getting out to call on an elderly client just after 9am. (PA)

Crab’s miraculous recovery

A giant crab that escaped a cooking pot after spending five days in a fridge is making a miraculous recovery.

The edible crab was caught by a fisherman in Dartmouth, who drove it on to Weston-super-Mare in his car. The fisherman was so impressed with the crustacean’s hand-sized claws and nine-inch shell that he gave it to a sick friend to cheer him up.

The crab then spent five days in the fridge. But the family decided they could not bring themselves to cook the crab, and instead they donated it to Bristol Aquarium, where David Waines said it was recovering.

“Hopefully it will continue to get better and be able to enjoy an unexpectedly long retirement here at the aquarium,” he said. (PA)
