I do not wish to see Malta repeating the mistakes of much of the rest of the world. The introduction of divorce adds nothing in promoting the well-being of society. What are the probable outcomes of its introduction? Greater personal freedom? Perhaps, but at what cost?
From my experience in England, divorce, among other problems, has led to an increasingly fragmented society where an aggressive, secular egoism is quite normal. This has undermined all sense of community and would not suit Malta at all.
The astute politician will recognise that it is prudent to follow the example of other countries where this leads to beneficial changes, but that it is negligent to do so when this will lead to detrimental effects on the people they have sworn, by God, to protect. Divorce is no quick fix, and all it will provide, if it is used as one, is a chronic and infectious sickness to society.
The Maltese are renowned for their bravery and courage in the face of adversity. Once again, we are being challenged by external forces.
We must answer the threat and fight to protect what is precious to us with all the moral fortitude instinctive to the Maltese.
Divorce is an unfortunate reality, but to give in to it, especially through an imitation of others indicative of weak character, is as reckless as it is unMaltese.
