Last month San Anton School's junior sector revived an old school tradition by organising a Pets' Day for the feast of St Anthony the Abbot
Excited students with their pets streamed into the junior sector common area, which became a menagerie of dogs, cats, tortoises, turtles, birds, goldfish, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs.
Dun ?or?, the Schools Spiritual Director then retold the story of St. Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of the Animal Kingdom and led the children in prayer to bless their animals. There was also an interesting talk on general pet care by Dr Quentin Lawson, a vet, who later answered the eager children's numerous questions. The children also proudly took part in a parade with their pets.
The memorable event ended with Rosanne Demanuele, the assistant head of the junior sector distributing the traditional ?ob?a ta' Sant Antnin to each child, symbolising how the raven brought bread to St Anthony while he was living in solitude.

Martina Maric, eight, in Grade 5 with Gerita
I have a tortoise called Gerita. She is 10 years old and her colour is greenish brown. We keep her in the yard. When she is not hibernating she roams the yard to look for lettuce leaves and blossoms. To protect herself, she tucks her head inside her shell.
Kyle Cuschieri, eight, in Grade 5 with his pigeon
Kyle Cuschieri, eight, described his pigeon as a bird with soft feathers. When you train the pigeon it flies back to where you trained it. The pigeon is an intelligent bird.
Sharon Portelli, 10, in Grade 7, with Star
And Sharon Portelli, 10, had this to say about her dog. My pet is a pug and she is very friendly. Her name is Star. At first it was very hard to house train her but with some vet tips and puppy booklets, she got trained. She is a special dog. At school we had Pets' Day and I took her. A teacher took a photo of me and it was fun. Everybody brought his pet. I want to encourage you to get a dog because they are real friends.
