The Birzebbuga day centre was the overall winner of a sports day for the elderly organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Care of the Elderly at the Corradino Sports Pavillion.

The activity, held for the ninth consecutive year, was attended by 550 senior citizens who frequent one of the 14 day centres in Malta. A total of 245 of the elderly took part in one of the several games.

The aim of the activity was for senior citizens to keep active, feel capable and needed in the different sectors of society, including sport.

Parliamentary Secretary Helen d'Amato distributed medals to the winners and spoke on the importance of physical activity, insisting this should be a continuous process and not restricted to a particular day.

Regular exercise kept illnesses at bay and helped to keep senior citizens mobile, she said.
