A mascot for children

Some years ago Junior News asked you to design a logo for the Commissioner for Children. Now could you design a mascot to promote the work of the Commissioner for Children? Junior News asked Sharon Attard, Manager of Research and Policy, about the idea.

Q. 1 Mascots are always popular in Malta. But why was it necessary to have a mascot for the Commissioner for Children?

An attractive and original mascot would be very appealing to children, and would be a character which represents children and their rights through the work of the commissioner. A mascot would remind children that the commissioner is working for them, and is interested in communicating with them more.

Q. 2 Will this be a mascot which will appear at certain events and occasions? How will it promote the work of the commissioner?

The mascot will appear at public events and occasions, in print, on the Commissioner for Children's website and through other mediums intended to promote the activities of the Commissioner for Children. The mascot will be an educational tool for children's rights and will be an identifiable character who children can relate to. The mascot will promote children's rights in a way which is child-friendly and aimed at children.

Q. 3 So, what will the competition judges be looking for in the designs?

The competition judges will be looking for a mascot which carries a positive image and a positive message. It is important that the designs are simple, attractive, original and appealing to children. Children should be able to identify the work of the Commissioner for Children through the Mascot.

Q. 4 And are there any things children should avoid when submitting their designs?

Children should avoid submitting designs which are too complicated. Original and simple designs are best.

Q. 5 Who will be judging the designs?

The Commissioner for Children, and the Council for Children.

Q. 6 Should the children give their mascot a name and/or add a few details about their design, for example the materials that could be used to make it?

It is very important that the mascot is given a name and a personality, so that children can relate to the mascot more. We want to know what kind of character the mascot has and what kind of a person the mascot is. Next week we will give you all the details you need to send in your entry to design a mascot for this important organisation.
