The spots by the Labour Party, relayed by very charming young ladies, propose several advantages of Labour's "partnership" over membership of the EU.
I have one question regarding these spots, which is troubling my understanding. Are the advantages - if they are advantages - mentioned, already negotiated and packaged ready to be put into effect immediately if we opt for this "partnership"? Or are we to wait for our friends in the MLP to start negotiations with the EU? In that case we had better wait for a complete change of negotiators in the EU because the ones at present in office have told Alfred Sant, more than once, that the MLP's proposals are only a wish list and cannot be entertained.
Another question that would follow is: how many years would we have to wait for such negotiations to start?
The Maltese nation has a very bright example of how matters are dealt with by the MLP. When the Nationalists were pressing for independence and succeeded, the MLP were all out against independence. Now, after 39 years, Labour are saying how good independence was for Malta. First sign of the sour grapes story.
When the Nationalist government introduced VAT, hell was let loose and the GWU was pulled in to give a helping hand to fight VAT. Now the MLP have once again seen the light (for election purposes) and have agreed to retain VAT.
The referendum debate is over. We are now awaiting the prime minister to announce the referendum date. When we are called to go to the polling stations we all have to keep in mind that voting No does not mean that we shall be getting the "partnership" proposal, but we shall be throwing Malta into isolation. Give this a thought.
I do not think that Europe will have any time to lose with Malta if we throw away this golden opportunity to be in a respected club where each and every member takes good care of every other member.
