Sergey Smbatyan, the principal conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, is leading the national orchestra in a programme of Russian works. These are Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 19 and Alexander Scriabin’s Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 55.
The violin concerto by Prokofiev delights audiences with its romantic lyricism and its virtuoso traits, while Scriabin’s symphony consists of five movements that develop from a sombre initial theme towards a triumphant finale.
Violinist Ye Eun Choi will accompany the orchestra.
