Abandoned animals to benefit from improved sanctuary facilities
Funding scheme supports upgrades and eases burden on voluntary organisations
Maintenance works at an animal sanctuary run by the Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA) have been completed through a government funding scheme aimed at improving facilities for abandoned animals.
The scheme provides up to €10,000 to eligible sanctuaries in Malta and Gozo to carry out maintenance and upgrade works.
On a visit to the facilities on Friday, the Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said said the initiative is intended to improve conditions for animals and support organisations that care for abandoned pets.
She added the funding is helping sanctuaries carry out essential upgrades while easing financial pressure on voluntary organisations.
“We recognise the invaluable work of volunteers and organisations who dedicate their time and resources every day to care for these animals,” Bugeja Said continued.
The Directorate for Animal Welfare said the animal sanctuaries play a “crucial role” in rescue and care operations.
Director Joseph John Vella said that “without the support and facilities provided by these sanctuaries, it would not be possible to carry out the same level of rescue operations”.
The funding scheme enabled a number of sanctuaries to carry out essential maintenance and improvement works to offer better conditions for abandoned animals and strengthen their welfare.
