Labour MEP hopeful Claudette Abela Baldacchino has joined Gozo Age Concern in their appeal to the government to provide a residential home for the elderly in Gozo.
She promised that if elected, she would work hard for elderly Gozitans to be given their dignity.
In a meeting with Gozo Age Concern, founder president Fr Mario Cassar said that 500 Gozitan elderly could end without a place where to receive care if a home for the elderly was not provided within six years, when the number of elderly in Gozo over 65 years would be well over 7,000.
He said that while there were no care homes for the elderly in Gozo, there were 15 in Malta, seven of which were operated by the government.
Mrs Abela Baldacchino said the elderly should no be the new poor of society and promised to fight all forms of discrimination.
She said she also supported the Gozo Age Concern in its campaign to increase membership.
