Abela says Labour’s doors remain open to all

Prime minister says Labour remains a 'tolerant and progressive' movement

Labour’s doors will continue to be “wide open for everyone,” Prime Minister Robert Abela told a Labour Party rally in Żurrieq on Tuesday evening.

He said the party had opened itself to those who may not have always supported it but still wanted to contribute to the country.

Abela said Labour had worked to break down barriers and prejudices, describing the party as “tolerant and progressive” and one that had prioritised civil rights.

“This is the movement which will continue to have its doors wide open for everyone.”

He said that, during his time as prime minister, he had met people with different beliefs and others who were not interested in politics.

However, he said, “ I believe, and I know you do too, that as long as you can contribute to your country and are willing to share that contribution, you are part of Team Malta.”

Abela told supporters that the country could only move forward when people worked together and embraced a collective national spirit. That spirit had been evident during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.

He said the same approach had shaped Labour’s electoral manifesto, which he described as the product of people’s experiences and contributions.

Labour politicians Michael Falzon and Andy Ellul also addressed the rally.

Candidates from the fifth district were also present, including Julia Farrugia, Miriam Dalli, Omar Farrugia, Owen Bonnici, Romilda Grech, Kaydem Schembri, and Roderick Zerafa. Abela is also a candidate on the district.

Abela also spoke at a Labour event in Gżira, where Manoel Island formed the backdrop to his address.

He said his government had given back land to the public and was turning Manoel Island into one of many new national parks.

Labour candidates Samantha Pace Gasan and James Grech also joined Abela at the Gżira event, speaking before the Labour Party leader took to the stage.
