The efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine in the Peugeot 107, has been awarded International Engine of the Year 2008 for the under one-litre category.

Emitting the very lowest CO2 emissions in the entire Irish car market at 109 g/km and consuming an economical 4.6 litres of fuel per 100km combined, the 107 is now an important benchmark for car makers, particularly as environmental awareness becomes increasingly relevant.

Judged by a panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries, the International Engine of the Year Awards highlight and acknowledge engine engineering excellence. Manufacturers are judged on drivability, performance, economy and refinement.

The awards have become one of the most sought-after automotive accolades and an effective marketing tool for the winning car makers. Awarded 294 points, judges paid tribute to the 1.0-litre mini motor's status as the lightest internal combustion engine in the world, with a weight of only 67kg, achieved through its all-aluminium construction.

The 107 is a compact but robust small car that attracts attention, thanks to its bold design and striking front bumper. Boasting an impressive list of standard specification for a small car, it achieved a 4-star rating in the EURO NCAP safety tests. Standard equipment includes air- conditioning, height adjustable steering wheel, driver and front passenger smart air bags, front side airbags, ABS, cornering stability control, immobiliser, speed-related electric power steering, in-dash CD player and socket for an MP3 player.
