The new board of the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations - Malta has drawn up an extensive action plan for this year.
One of the most important initiatives in the pipeline is an accreditation scheme aimed at internal quality control among its members, the ultimate aim being to raise standards.
John Dimech, the newly elected Feltom president, said that host families played a very important role in the EFL niche market and the federation was currently discussing this issue with the Malta Tourism Authority with a view to attracting more families.
Mr Dimech succeeds Francis Stivala who served the federation for the past 13 years.
Seventeen of the 40 licensed English language schools are members of Feltom and currently the federation has three applications for membership. Feltom members represent about 70 per cent of the total number of foreign students that enrol in English language courses at all EFL schools in Malta.
