Magistrate Miriam Hayman yesterday acquitted a 34-year-old Chinese man of charges of having unlawfully detained a Gzira woman against her will and of having subjected the woman to bodily harm or threatened her with death.

In her judgment the magistrate noted there was conflicting evidence in this case for each of the three women, allegedly present when the incident occurred, had given different versions of what had actually occurred.

In the light of the conflicting evidence, the court found that the necessary burden of proof had not been satisfied by the prosecution and acquitted the accused.

Dr Jason Azzopardi was defence counsel.
