Alternattiva Demokratika has called for a public inquiry on the conditions in detention centres for illegal immigrants and appealed for an end to the detention of immigrants at police headquarters.
"When dealing with asylum seekers, detention should only be resorted to in exceptional circumstances and the dignity of these persons should always be respected. We are particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation of the 121 immigrants living in three cramped rooms in the police depot.
"It is no surprise that immigrants have rioted and even escaped from this place. The majority of these immigrants have been detained for at least six months and some have been there for as long as 19 months," AD's spokesman for civil rights, James Debono added.
