Alternattiva Demokratika's international secretary Ralph Cassar has congratulated Mahmoud Abbas on his election as Palestinian President.

Mr Cassar said Mr Abbas's election was a very welcome expression of democracy in the Middle East and showed that the Palestinian people want to take an active part in democratic life.

He hoped that all parties involved would waste no time in negotiating a lasting peace settlement, leading to a viable and sovereign Palestinian state co-existing peacefully with the state of Israel.
